Eat Like a Local, The Cuisine of Cambodia
Cuisine in the Kingdom of Angkor
Food Basics
Although it shares similarities with its Thai neighbor, Cambodian food is also influenced by Indian, Vietnamese, and Chinese cuisine. Cambodian cuisine is mostly known for its use of Prahok— a fermented fish sauce with a very distinctive flavor that adds a salty tang to most dishes (however it is never used with a noodle dish).
Although noodles are popular, the staple in Cambodian food is rice, which is served with almost every meal. Most meals also include soup that is served with the main dishes. Freshwater fish is also a fundamental part of most Cambodian diets, more popular than any other kind of meat.
Most Cambodian meals include three or four separate dishes, each of which usually tries to give something different (with individual dishes hitting different taste buds by either being sweet, sour, salty, or bitter). Cambodian diets also include a variety of spices, kroeung, vegetables, fruits, meats (including frog, turtle, and tarantulas), and noodles. Most fresh food items are bought and sold at the town market and from street vendors.
EtiquetteUnlike the United States, where most meals are consumed in an informal setting, Cambodians have certain etiquette dos and don’ts. You should always drink when a toast is made as well as wait for your host to sit down before you do- it is also considered rude to not accept food placed in your bowl by your host.
You should learn to use chopsticks before going to Asia-it is seen as polite, but never place your chopsticks to form a V in a bowl in any setting (it is a symbol of death). An appropriate tip amount is 5-10% in a restaurant, unless there is a service charge already on your bill (automatic tip).
Popular DishesAmok Trey- Fish that is in a thick coconut milk with curry, wrapped in a banana leaf, and then steamed.
Jroak Sway- Generally served as a side dish, it is unripe mango salad that is flavored with peppers and fish sauce.
Ansom Chrook- A rice cake that is filled with mung bean paste and pork, then wrapped with banana leaves.
Somlar Machu- A sour soup that can include meats like chicken or fish. It has a tamarind base and also includes herbs, tomatoes, water greens, lotus roots, and is often flavored with prahok.

While preparing to travel to Thailand, or any other destination in Southeast Asia, being aware of a few simple things can often save you from any unnecessary downtime in your explorations. Anyone who has ever been to Thailand can tell you that its amazingly safe, the people are extremely friendly, and it is generally fine to roam around without a care in the world. Many people however have made the mistake of overlooking a few basic rules, which can easily fall off your radar while enjoying yourself in the land of smiles.
A new breed of student is emerging. Aware that some of the best experiences in life come though living it, and thinking outside the box enough to earn a degree while traveling the world, often at a fraction of the cost. Sound impossible? Many of these new age students are realizing that the normal trend in education just isn't cut out for them, and after getting the facts on how to make other educational options work for them, they set off traveling the world while earning their degree.
Situated in the fertile agricultural heartlands of the Central Plains, the rural landscape of Nakhon Pathom province is a mosaic of lush fields, orchards and plantations and farmland nurtured by a network of rivers, waterways and irrigation canals. Witness this magical event from February 7th to the 13th, 2009 at the Phra Pathom Chedi pagoda temple grounds, Nakhon Pathom city center.
Khmer weddings all have a general list of ceremonies that are performed to join a man and woman into marriage— each one believed to be related to a mythical story. Like American weddings where many decisions are based on social status and financial situation, the length of a Khmer wedding is also dependent on these things. It can last from one morning to three days to an entire week.
Although there are many religions, cultural customs, and views of life throughout the world, death is generally considered a somber time across the board. How we deal with the reality that a person of social and personal importance will no longer be around however is vastly different throughout the world.
If you like musical acts such as Dashboard Confessional and the Pussycat Dolls—even any form of bluegrass— you would enjoy the music scene in Cambodia. The music in Cambodia has many similarities to the music scenes of other countries: there are many different styles, music is sold and distributed at live shows, it is used for religious ceremonies, and fans follow popular acts. You can even find videos and tour dates for popular Cambodian music acts such as the alternative rock band Coconut and the pop/hip-hop singer Tata Young from You Tube and their Myspace pages.
There are few, if any, historical sites in the world that can boast of being the focal point of a nation’s flag. Angkor Wat, the national pride of Cambodia, is one of those places. Originally built in the 12th century for King Suryavarman II of the Khmer empire, this temple complex was at the heart of a capital city that spanned an area larger than modern day Paris. This World Heritage Site’s architecture and stone carvings is world renowned, as well as its spiritual significance to the Hindu and Buddhist religions. In recent years, the area of Angkor has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in South East Asia.

The Bonn Om Touk Festival (spelled differently in various parts of the country) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, is a must for anyone interested in seeing a unique natural phenomenon--a reversing river. Every November, the flow between the Tonle Sap River and the Mekong River reverses direction. Cambodians celebrate this with three days of celebration and boat racing.

I would like to thank you and your company very much for its excellent organisation of our visit to Siem Reap earlier this month. We greatly enjoyed the visit and found it most interesting. We were well looked after from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. In particular we would like to thank Mr Sophoam, our guide. He was extremely friendly, polite and knowledgeable about his country, its history and the temples we visited. I shall be pleased to recommend your company to others visiting Cambodia and beyond.
