Wifi, or "wireless fidelity" is becoming an essential part of life for some travelers. Many travelers these days will only stay in hotels that offer free wifi, or are close to a cafe or restaurant that does. Many plan which islands, beaches and cities they will see on their vacation to Thailand based on free wireless access points. It used to be that backpackers and travelers coming to Thailand where associated with sleeping bags and their trusty copy of the Lonely Planet, and now, you are finding more travelers traveling with laptops instead.
Sound crazy? It may, but the new generation of travelers often work in jobs where they are afforded the luxury of being able to work remotely. Travelers pour into Thailand searching for the many places where they can connect to the internet for free. Say goodbye to that Loney Planet, unless its the online version.
The nice thing about wifi technology is that any wifi enabled computer can connect via the 802.11 standard from very far away, sometimes as far as 300 meters. Often, things are blocking the signal and the access points which broadcast the signal are of lesser quality, which can reduce the distance to around 80-100 meters. To make use of wireless internet, your computer needs to have a wifi enabled or have an adapter. If you don't have one, you can easily purchase a wifi card in your country or in Thailand. They make USB blue-tooth adapters and wifi adapters for PCMCIA, which go in the credit card like slots normally on the side of your computer. Once you have the technology hooked up, connecting to an access point or "hot spot" is easy. What kinds of hot spots are there? Well, of the free ones, there are those establishments that are aware of the fact that they are offering free wifi to the public, and those establishments that aren't. As a public service, we will list both :) There are also many paid hot spots that can be found in almost every shopping mall and public area. Bangkok has good wireless coverage throughout the city. If you are a resident in Thailand, or here for a while, it is worth stopping into a True shop, or an AIS center and asking about monthly plans. Most of the paid wireless internet hot spots in Bangkok charge an excessive rate per hour, normally 150 - 180 Baht. However, you can (presently) get a monthly, unlimited wifi subscription that covers all hot spots for that provider for 500 a month. If you do decide to sign up for a month plan, check the website for your service provider to see where all the hot spots that they offer are located. There are too many providers and too many hot spots to list them all here.
Another quick option worth mentioning is that EDGE and GPRS are available in Bangkok. If you are not familiar with EDGE, it is a more efficient way to transmit data and allows for faster connection speeds, similar to those of 3G. Bangkok now has very good coverage for both EDGE and GPRS networks, EDGE being much faster. In order to get signed up, you need to buy an EDGE adapter card, which can be purchased from a number of locations in Bangkok. Once hooked up, you can be online anywhere you like. No more searching out wifi enabled cafe's or coffee shops. You could sit in a park, a shopping mall, or just about anywhere you wish in Bangkok. Most of these systems will automatically connect to GPRS if EDGE service is not available. Although the speed of EDGE is not as fast as most of the wifi hot spots, you can still connect a little faster than a regular dial-up modem and best of all, it travels with you. With EDGE or GPRS you can be online anywhere, anytime. Just a thought that might interest some.
Anyhow, enough said. Here is an up to date list of all the Bangkok hot spots that we are aware of:
Free wireless internet in Bangkok:
World Trade Center:
Thai Knowledge Park (TK Park) is a government run project to provide wifi to the public. Is it supposed to be free? Who knows, but free wifi is available there. It is reported that the signal is strong and connection speeds are fast, especially on the upper floors (5 and 6) the signal is said to be the best.
Sukhumvit
Bourbon Street Bar and Restaurant in Washington Square on Sukhamvit Soi 22. Free wifi is available at this friendly American bar and grill.
Larry's Dive on Sukhamvit Soi 22 offers free wifi to customers. You have to open the browser and log in to the service, and plan on being kicked off every hour as part of their terms of use. You are free to log right back in and resume your surfing, so it's more of an annoyance than anything. Larry's serves up Mexican food and has a bit of a southern California surfer theme. It is located a couple hundred meters down the soi on the right. Parking is available across the street.
The Londoner located at the corner of Sukhamvit and Soi 33. It is down the stairs across the street from the 7/11. It's a British pub that offers everything you would expect, minus the football hooligans. It has a pretty complete, and expensive menu if your into surfing while you eat. The wifi network is free, but has a password, so you have to ask the staff for details.
Ronny's New York Pizza on Sukhamvit Soi 4 (Soi Nana) right down the street from Nana Plaza. Offers great NYC style pizza for very reasonable prices and free wireless internet until they close at 2am. It's a little bit of walk from Nana Plaza, around 300 meters down on the right side of the soi.
Tamarind Cafe on Sukhumvit Soi 20. I love this place. This, in my opinion is a great place to be. Even if they didn't have internet I would still frequent this spot. The Tamarind is an art gallery in combination with, most likely, the best vegetarian food in the city. The internet is quick and stable, and the food is great. Even if you are not a vegetarian this menu will win you over. I simply cannot recommend this place enough. This is one spot where it all seems to come together nicely. Vegetarian food, free wifi internet and a swank art gallery environment. A perfect place to relax, meet with friends, have a bottle of wine and some amazing vegetarian food. Truely a must visit.
Omni Tower Apartments on Sukhamvit Soi 4, free wireless internet is available in the lobby.
Hazarindo is located on Sukhamvit Soi 38. Nothing overly special, but the service is friendly and if you happen to be in the neighborhood looking for some signal, they have it there. It is your basic wifi-enabled restaurant.
Sukhumvit 1 Plaza which as you can guess by the name is located on Sukhumvit Soi 1. If you like to be online while surrounded by ladies in almost no clothing, this is your place. Revolution bar seems to be the internet headquarters, but you can grab the signal from anywhere in the area. You most likely won't get much work done here, and you will see a few pathetic 'falang' making a poor attempt at looking 'hi-so' because they own a laptop, but if you can manage to focus, you may accomplish something online.
Sin located on Soi 4, a little past Nana plaza down a small parking area / soi, you will see the sign. Sin is a mix of a disco, nightclub, restaurant, and pool hall, with free internet. Doesn't that draw a mental picture?
The Landmark Hotel which is located near the Nana BTS station. The hotel offers free wifi in the lobby area and internet is also available on the patio at the small attached bakery. Free internet is available in the business center on the 27th floor if your would rather enjoy the view.
McBen Coffee Shop located on Sukhamvit Soi 8. Good internet, good coffee, and fair snack-type food. The offer a separate air-conditioned smoking lounge that closes at midnight. They are positioned almost at the front of the soi on the right hand side.
Robin Hood on Sukhumvit near Soi 33/1. Men in tights? Not sure.. Just know that they have internet.
Siam Smile Bar on Sukhumvit Soi 7/1. A typical small girlie bar with free wifi internet, another one of those locations that you will be challenged to keep your eyes on your computer.
Old German Beerhouse is a beer bar that is located on Sukhamvit Soi 11 on the right. Lots of seats, lots of girls. The internet is free for customers although you rarely see anyone with a laptop. The wifi is free, just ask the staff for the password.
Starbucks on Sukhamvit Soi 5, and you have to be on the second floor to use the free wifi network that is available. This is not provided by Starbucks and the signal is on and off. The speed is a little slow and bubbles a lot, but normally works. When your there, look for the "Maginet" network (SSID).
Outside Amari Boulevard on Sukhamvit Soi 5. The speed could be better, but it works. It is believed that this is being broadcast from the lobby, look for SSID LB01.
Absolute 7 Bar at Sukhumvit Soi 7/1. Friendly staff and a nice menu. Located across from the coffee world, you can see it from the outside seating area. The internet is good, but it seems they often forget to pay the bill and sometimes its turned off until they get payment sorted out.
Cathouse bar in Nana Plaza. The cathouse bar knows nothing about this, the wifi signal just happens to be in the air. Since it's located in Nana plaza, I think that about sums it up.
Grand Westin Hotel located on the corner of Sukhumvit and Soi 19. Free wireless is available in the lobby. If your looking for a room, and you have the budget, this is the place.
Business Inn on Sukhamvit Soi 11. This is a hotel / restaurant with very nice staff, and very angry, rude management. If you are eating at the restaurant and you try to use the wifi, don't let the night manager see. You will hear the sound of thunder as this big bodied mamason type woman comes storming over to your table to make a grand show in front of all the restaurant guests implying that you are stealing. Apparently, the wifi is only available for hotel guests, and for as rude as the management is, its hard to believe that they have many of those. We have been informed from many, many guests of the restaurant and hotel that they would never go back, only because of this manager. We have no idea why they keep this her on the payroll, it must be a family member, who knows. Anyhow, if you decided to stay here (your crazy) and if you decided to use the internet and your not staying here (your even crazier).
Kiwi Cafe on Sukhamvit Soi 22, right next to Larry's Dive restaurant. Open from 8am until 2am, they offer coffee and light food that go nicely with a small selection of Kiwi and Aussie wines. The speed is very fast, and they supply a few computers free for customers if you do not have a laptop handy.
Sportbar on Sukamvit Soi 22, about a 15 minute walk from Sukhamvit on the right hand side. It's next door to Liberty Place condos, and you will see the oval yellow sign as you approach it. Good music and friendly staff. You have to ask for the password, and they will help you get set up.
Jasmine Suites at Sukhamvit Soi 23. Free wifi at pool side, a beautiful thing. Also available in the lobby.
Serendipity Cafe at Sukhamvit Soi 11. It's easy to spot this if you know what to look for. Keep an eye open for an old teak wood building next to Cheap Charlies.
Livingstone's is located at Sukhamvit Soi 33. Free wifi is available in the lobby and around the pool. Good steaks and Thai food.
Black Swan Pub can be found on Sukhamvit, near Soi 12, just under the Asoke BTS station. They just started offering free wifi and the speeds are reported as being good.
Big Mango Bar located inside Nana Plaza. Free wireless internet for customers, cheapest beer in Nana Plaza and plenty of very simple, flirty conversation. This is my favorite spot in the area for a hunger pit stop. Great food and a regular special that leaves you wondering how they can make money on it.. I give this spot a ten.
Bully's Bar is on Sukhamvit road near the Nana intersection. If you are leaving Nana Plaza, walking toward Sukhamvit, at the corner of Soi 4 and Sukhamvit make a right walking away from the Nana BTS station. You will see it about a two minute walk down Sukhamvit on the left. Good burgers and sandwiches, very friendly staff. Normally has live music on weekends. Internet is free and fast.
Coffee world / Subway on Sukhamvit just up from Soi 4. Note, that there are two of these locations within walking distance, only the one around the corner from Nana Plaza offers internet.
The Dynasty Grande Hotel on Sukhamvit Soi 8. Wifi is available in the lobby and in rooms on the lower floors. A free LAN connection is provided in the rooms for the upper level rooms that cannot pick up the wifi signal.
Honey Hotel is located at Sukhamvit Soi 19. The signal is being broadcast from the coffee shop / restaurant, so any of the windows facing that direction have the best signal.
Honey House Guest House at 6/3-4 Sukhumvit Soi. 22. Offers nice rooms with wifi access. It is located in a small courtyard like spot, around a few massage places. Friendly folks..
The Dubliner is on Sukhamvit near Soi 20 and 22. As you would have guessed, it's an Irish pub that has everything you would expect. Good breakfast, fast internet.
The Fun House at the end of Sukhamvit Soi 11 also offers free wifi.
Khao Sarn Road
Oh My Cod, a British style cafe with free wifi for customers. Ask the staff for the password after you order something and they will be happy to assist you in getting connected. Allow us to recommend the fish and chips.
Ranee's is located down the alley on the south side of Khoa Sarn Road, the connection seems to be OK and if you happen to be a backpacker traveling with a laptop, you will fit right in.
Chao Praya River
The Shangri La Hotel right on the river is a five star hotel that offer that offers a free wifi connection. Being a five star hotel, they offer almost everything actually, if you have the budget to support it.
The Sheraton Orchid Hotel on the river. Another five star hotel with great rooms, food, and live music at night. Good wifi coverage around the lobby and public areas. Expensive place to stay, but offers a first-class atmosphere.
Thammasat University is near the river and offers wireless internet access for free. If you are older, try to avoid wearing a white shirt and black pants to save yourself from the student jokes.
Silom
Coffee Society is a 24 hour, predominantly gay cafe/restaurant near the base of the Sala Daeng BTS. Is is supported by a mixed crowd and offers seating on several floors. Friendly service and reasonable prices with fast and solid internet. Has a seating area outside if you like to watch the people walk by while you surf.
Telephone Pub is located at Silom Soi 4 and mostly caters to gay and alternative preferences, as do most of the establishments in this area. If thats what your looking for, this is the place. If it's not, save yourself the discomfort.
New York Deli near Silom Soi 4. This sandwich deli is a cross between what you would expect from a real NY deli, and a subway. However, since we are not in NYC, we will give it a thumbs up for a franchise that offers something similar. Good sandwiches, friendly staff.
Soi Thonglor
Big John's is located on Soi Thonglor Soi 9. It's a guesthouse that is open 24/7 with affordable western food and free wireless internet. May we recommend the meat loaf and the milk shakes. If your up for food that will put on the pounds, this is the place.
Las Cachos is between Soi 14 and 16. Friendly staff. The signal speed is fair, not the place if you need to download some big files but works for checking email or surfing the web.
Wireless Road
Nai Lert Park Hotel on Wireless road offers at least two free internet wifi connections in the lobby, in the adjoining restaurant, bar, and pool. Also, the rooms facing the garden can pick up on the signal but it is a little weak.
All Seasons Place on Wireless road has a lot of wireless networks in the area. The network "wing" is open, free and fast.
Conrad Hotel on Wireless road offers free wifi internet in the lobby and the connected lobby bar.
Sathorn
Hu'u Bar and Restaurant at the Ascot on Sathorn Road is a nice mid to upper scale restaurant. Great food and free internet.
Evergreen Laurel Hotel located at the corner of Sathorn Road and Soi Pipat. Offers free wireless internet in the lobby.
Petchaburi
Bangkok City Sweet Hotel on Pethaburi road, right next to the on ramp for the expressway. If you reserve a room online, they give you a 50 Baht discount off of their usual rate of 700 Baht a night. The rooms are clean and the wifi is available in the rooms and the lobby. The hotel is making an effort to accommodate business travelers, and it seems to be doing that well. It is a little far to walk to the BTS, but if you have half an hour to spend it's do-able. There are normally taxies parked outside to accommodate hotel guests, as there is not much in the immediate area. Overall, it's a good value for the money.
Jessie's Minimart on Petchaburi Soi 43/1 in a mall area known as Miami Villa. The store is a mini-mart with some tables outside. If you live in the area it is nice to know about, but it is not an ideal place to go only for the internet. Owned by a Canadian and his Thai wife and open 24/7.
Suriwong
Cafe Kaldi located at 56 Suriwong Road, near the entrance to the Montien Hotel. The wireless internet is free and seems stable.
Tarntawan Place Hotel on Suriwong road opposite the Tawana Ramada Hotel. Free wireless internet is available in the lobby.
Wifi internet in other areas of Bangkok
Boss Apparels and Minimart is on Rama 1, next to the national stadium BTS station. This is an interesting combination, a tailor shop / wifi cafe / mini-mart. Located across from Mahboonkrong and is among a number of nice budget hotels and guesthouses.
Assumption University (ABAC) in Hua Mark, off of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 24 (turn right at the Big C off of Ramkhamhaeng) has several free wireless networks. You can ask students to point you in the direction of "E building" where there is free wifi on the ground floor, or next to the bookstore.
The Barbican on Soi Thaniya has a free wifi signal that you can connect to from one of the neighboring businesses. It normally gets turned off in the evening when the business closes, but if you are there before early evening it should be available.
Breeze Beer Garden on Chaengwattana Soi 26. Thai food, pool, darts, UBC, Asahi, draft kloster, heineken and chang beer.
The Moment Cafe at Charoen Krung Soi 50, opposite the Robinson's in Bangrak. It's a quiet place with good coffee, fast internet, and polite staff.
Shinawatra Tower III on Vipavadi Rangsit Road. The wifi is available on the ground floor. Also on the ground floor are an S&P restaurant and a Japanese restaurant, and you can grab the signal from inside the restaurants.
Sawasdii Krungthep Inn on Soi Rambutrii. The wifi is in the air, where it comes from is a mystery.
Muang Thai-Phatra Complex on Rachadapisek road. There are about seven or eight free wireless networks in this complex, including a few paid networks. There is a starbucks here where you can have a coffee and surf for free.
Fashion Island Shopping Center on Ram Indra road. The wifi is free but you have to register and get a user ID and password. After two hours you have to log back in, but you can use the same username and password. The wifi network can be accessed from the local Starbucks.
King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in north Bangkok offers free wireless internet at the Faculty of Engineering at building number 81.
Barista Jam Cafe at Soi ChokChai Ruamit Soi 16, between Wipawadee-Rangsit and Rachadapisek. Pleasant café with friendly staff, indoor and outdoor tables and a good internet connection. Mediterraneo Restaurant in the Somerset Building on Soi Tonson, just off of Ploenchit road. Fast and free wireless internet.
WearEver Laundromat and Lounge between Samsen Road soi 1 and 3. Located just over the bridge a little north of Khao San Road. If you are looking to do you laundry and surf the internet, this is the only reported place that offers that mix. Wifi is free for customers

"I just returned on a 2 week tour of Thailand and Laos with your company. Had a great time and it was so well organized. I would like to get Mr. Aesopa's email so I can email him some pictures of my son and I. Mr. Aesopa is a wonderful guide and he really enhanced the trip by showing us some unusual places and food. We even tried dried insects and snake whisky. Thank you again and we can't wait to plan our next trip. Our friends want to go to with us to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the near future."
