Tourist Visas: Where do you need them and how to get one.

The worst possible scenario for any traveler would be enduring that 12 hour flight and upon reaching your destination, find out that you cannot enter the country because you failed to get your visa. For some countries, such as Vietnam, a visa must be obtained from the country’s embassy prior to travel. So it is very important to check the requirements of every country you intend on traveling to. A good place to start is the United States Bureau of Consular Affairs, which provides general information about a country’s entry requirements and also links to specific embassy sites where you can download visa applications.

As stated above, travel into Vietnam requires securing a visa prior to arrival. A tourist visa can be obtained by mail or in person at the Embassy of Vietnam. The process of acquiring a visa to Vietnam is a bit more complicated than other countries because it requires a visa approval that must be obtained by the applicant’s host in Vietnam or the Embassy in addition to the completed application, original passport and a fee. More detailed information and the application can be found at the Vietnamese Embassy’s website.

Malaysia is a country in the South East Asia region that requires only a valid passport for stays of 90 days or less. Those visiting Thailand for 30 days or less do not need to obtain visas either but if you outstay your limit you may be jailed, fined and even deported so make sure you do secure a visa if you intend to stay longer. Traveling to Cambodia requires a visa that can be obtained by mail and at the major airports (Phnom Penh, Siem Riep) and border crossings in Cambodia. Applying for the 30-day visa requires a complete application, passport sized photograph, valid passport and a fee of $20 (for a tourist visa, $25 for business). All this information and the visa application can be found at the Embassy of Cambodia website.

Likewise, a passport and visa is required for entry into Laos and the visa can be obtained both by mail and at various ports of entry upon arrival in Laos. This 30-day tourist visa requires a completed application, three passport sized photographs, a passport and a fee of $50. Visit the Laos Embassy website for further information.

Obtaining visas is a tedious task but a necessary one and preparing in advance will ensure smooth traveling.
