Every year photography exhibits, classes, and enthusiasts gather for a multi-day photography event in Siem Riep, the neighboring town to Angkor Wat, in Cambodia.

Every year since 2005, photographers and photography enthusiasts gather in Siem Reap, Cambodia for the Angkor Photography Festival. With emphasis on the spirit of creativity and sharing, the festival is considered praiseworthy for bringing photography from around the world under the same roof.

The Angkor festival is the first annual photography event in Cambodia. It consists of print exhibitions, outdoor projections, workshops for selected emerging photographers, and workshops for street children in Siem Reap.

The festival sets itself apart from many others with its strong humanitarian focus, especially with the free workshops for the children in Cambodia. Although it is a relatively new photography festival, industry experts and photography enthusiasts have high hopes for the growth of the festival.

The Temples of Angkor Wat

There are few, if any, historical sites in the world that can boast of being the focal point of a nation’s flag. Angkor Wat, the national pride of Cambodia, is one of those places. Originally built in the 12th century for King Suryavarman II of the Khmer empire, this temple complex was at the heart of a capital city that spanned an area larger than modern day Paris. This World Heritage Site’s architecture and stone carvings is world renowned, as well as its spiritual significance to the Hindu and Buddhist religions. In recent years, the area of Angkor has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in South East Asia.

Eat Like a Local, The Cuisine of Cambodia

Although it shares similarities with its Thai neighbor, Cambodian food is also influenced by Indian, Vietnamese, and Chinese cuisine.

Royal Ploughing Ceremony

The beginning of the rice-growing season is celebrated every year with an ancient royal rite in which oxen plough through ceremonial ground while rice seed is sown. After ploughing, the oxen are offered various plates of food and a prediction of how bountiful the growing season will be is based on what the oxen eat.

A Khmer Wedding

Khmer weddings all have a general list of ceremonies that are performed to join a man and woman into marriage— each one believed to be related to a mythical story. Like American weddings where many decisions are based on social status and financial situation, the length of a Khmer wedding is also dependent on these things. It can last from one morning to three days to an entire week.

The Khmer Music Scene

If you like musical acts such as Dashboard Confessional and the Pussycat Dolls—even any form of bluegrass— you would enjoy the music scene in Cambodia. The music in Cambodia has many similarities to the music scenes of other countries: there are many different styles, music is sold and distributed at live shows, it is used for religious ceremonies, and fans follow popular acts. You can even find videos and tour dates for popular Cambodian music acts such as the alternative rock band Coconut and the pop/hip-hop singer Tata Young from You Tube and their Myspace pages.

Although there are many religions, cultural customs, and views of life throughout the world, death is generally considered a somber time across the board. How we deal with the reality that a person of social and personal importance will no longer be around however is vastly different throughout the world.
