Rainforest World Music Festival
An annual three-day festival in Sarawak, Malaysia, the Rainforest World Music Festival celebrates the diversity of world music with a variety of international artists performing in a rainforest setting. Alongside these musicians will be a variety of food stalls, souvenir stalls , and arts and crafts booths. Before the musical acts take the stage in the evening, there will be ethno-musical lectures, jam sessions, mini concerts and informative sessions. In conjunction with the music festival, there will also be a Rainforest World Craft Bazaar featuring over 78 stalls of handicrafts and artwork from local and foreign talent.

The festival was founded by musician Randy Raine-Reusch and Canadian Robert Basiuk, who was the deputy CEO of the Sarawak Tourist Board at the time, and is organized annually by the Sarawak Tourist Board. Mr. Raine-Reush and Mr. Basiuk felt that local musical traditions were disappearing, and not just in Sarawak but globally. They ultimately came up with the idea of a festival joining professional musicians with traditional village musicians with no professional training and having daytime workshops to involve the audience. The first Rainforest World Music festival was held in 1997 with about 1500 attendees. Now in its 12th year, last year’s attendance was over 22,000.
Groups that have performed at the festival in the past include: Joey Ayala (Philippines- 1998), Shooglenifty (Scotland- 1999), Inka Marka (South America- 2000), Rajery (Madagascar- 2001), Black Umfolosi (Zimbabwe- 2002), Peatbog Faeries (Scotland- 2006), and Ross Daly(Greece -2008).
The festival is held on the grounds of the Sarawak Cultural Village located near the base of Mount Santubong, north of Kuching. The Village replicates the traditional dwellings found in Sarawak. The daytime workshops will be held inside traditional houses in the village. Performers and audience members alike are allowed to mingle freely and performers often run hands-on workshops during the day. The nightly concerts are held on an outdoor stage with an open lawn.
The bands that will perform this year are Zawose Family Africa from Tanzania, Noreummachi (Korea), Moana & the Tribe (New Zealand), Red Chamber (Canada/China), Jouhiorkesteri (Finland), Muzsikas (Hungary), Inti Illimani (Chile), Jeff & The Vida (USA), Dazkarieh (Portugal), Oudaden (Morocco), Poum Tchak (France), Asika (Malaysia), Sekaa Jaya Jenggala (Indonesia), The Nicholas Orchestra (Poland), Lan-E Tuyang (Sarawak, Malaysia), Kinabalu Merdu Sound (Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia) and AkashA (Malaysia).
Tickets can be purchased online and at the gate. The tickets are priced at RM90 (25US) for a one-day pass and RM250 (70US) for three-day passes. Tickets will be more expensive if bought at the gate.

"I just returned on a 2 week tour of Thailand and Laos with your company. Had a great time and it was so well organized. I would like to get Mr. Aesopa's email so I can email him some pictures of my son and I. Mr. Aesopa is a wonderful guide and he really enhanced the trip by showing us some unusual places and food. We even tried dried insects and snake whisky. Thank you again and we can't wait to plan our next trip. Our friends want to go to with us to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the near future."
