1. Vipassana Meditation Retreat

This is a great experience if you have the time. I did 5 weeks at Wat Chom Tong which is about 90 kilometers outside of Chiang Mai, but they also offer retreats at Wat Doi Suthep which is really close to Chiang Mai. You can do shorter lengths of time, but you really need at least a few weeks to get something out of it.

2. Ho Chi Minh Trail Hike

This requires you find your way to Sepon, Laos. This will be an adventure all in its own, as no foreigners make this trip and the transportation isn't set up to accommodate you. After getting there, I just started walking from Sepon south down the trail. Its a very long and boring hike, i walked for about 3 weeks. There are trucks that run once a day up the road so if you decided in mid hike that you are sick of it, you will have one opportunity every day to catch a truck back to Sepon. You will pass through a very small village every 20 miles or so, who will treat you like a rock star and put you up for the night. People are great. I'm putting this in wellness rather than adventure because in hindsight it feels like it was more enlightening than adventurous.

3. Muay Thai Boxing

Nope, I never had a real fight as I lack the desire to really break myself up that bad. But, I did check into Lanna Muay Thai, and then Pedro's Gym which are both in Chiang Mai for a total of 6 months. It's hard. But, I was 26 and had gotten used to working in an office, and put on a few pounds. After 6 months of daily training, I was trim and hard, also not to bad with my knees and elbows. Everyone should get in fit shape for real at least once in their life.

4. Be a Beach Bum

I spent 7 months living on a very quiet beach, and didn't own a pair of shoes for 5 of them. When you return to the real world and find yourself back to slaving to make deadlines, its nice to have this kind of experience in your history for perspective.
