Yoga in Thailand

With its origins in India, yoga has developed a global following; It has spread throughout Asia and is taking over the West with its ideals of exercising the body and the spirit. In the West, yoga devotees swear by the tenets of yoga that include an emphasis on breathing and meditation to bring health to the mind and body. Those interested in practicing yoga need not travel to India to seek out yogis. There are centers throughout Asia that offer classes and retreats for all levels of students. I will focus specifically on what can be found in Thailand.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga benefits both the well-being of the body and the mind through mastering various breathing techniques, meditating, and contorting the body into the poses that yoga is famous for. For the weary traveler, yoga is perfect for relaxing and reflecting after long days of travel to and from busy tourist attractions. An hour of meditation and stretching for an exhausted mind and achy joints will undoubtedly rejuvenate the spirit and prepare you for another day of travel!

Your options in Thailand

Thailand has a vast array of yoga centers in its major cities; some are international schools with centers all over the world and some are of the local variety. Many offer one-time classes (which would be the most convenient option for travelers) in addition to monthly memberships, retreats, and workshops. Some institutions have websites so you can go ahead and contact them before your trip to iron out the details. One school, known as Absolute Yoga, has six studios throughout Bangkok and offers classes for all levels of students in different disciplines of yoga including ‘hot yoga’ which is taught in a heated classroom. According to their site, classes begin at 650 baht (US$18) and workshops begin at 2000 baht (US$56).

Agama Yoga School in Koh Phangan offers a ten-day silent meditation retreat once a month for 3000 baht (US$84). Agama Yoga is an international school with centers in Canada, Greece, India, Israel, and the United Kingdom.

Yoga Thailand, founded by a couple from New York City, specializes in offering retreats and residential stays in a beautiful center on Laem Sor beach in Koh Samui. Week long retreats start at 590 baht (US$17) and includes a shared room, meals, and the yoga program. Residential stays in a shared room including meals and the yoga program begin at 70 baht (US$2) per day. Daily schedules for retreats and residential stay are available on their website and reservations can be made online. Mornings begin with tea and meditation, then yoga and a brunch buffet followed by a workshop and dinner buffet. The day ends with a visit to the steam room and meditation by the beach.

Exotissimo.com: Perfect Thailand Tours at the Best Possible Prices

"I just returned on a 2 week tour of Thailand and Laos with your company. Had a great time and it was so well organized. I would like to get Mr. Aesopa's email so I can email him some pictures of my son and I. Mr. Aesopa is a wonderful guide and he really enhanced the trip by showing us some unusual places and food. We even tried dried insects and snake whisky. Thank you again and we can't wait to plan our next trip. Our friends want to go to with us to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the near future."
