Shopping at Chatuchak (JJ Market)
Chatuchak Market, most commonly known to foreigners as JJ Market, is a must see if you are planning on shopping while visiting Bangkok. Make sure to get there early, and plan on spending the day as there is an amazing amount of ground to cover. JJ Market is an outdoor mecca of shops, markets and vendors selling pretty much anything you can think of. The range of gift ideas and export possibilities are literally to vast to fit into in this article, and you simply must see it to believe it. Plan on spending the entire day, and don't expect to see it all on your first visit. One thing that we will guarantee is that you will leave with more than you intended to buy, and with things you never thought you wanted.
Origin of Chatuchak Market
Chatuchak Market owes its origin to Field Marshal Plaek Bhibulsongkran, the late prime minister of Thailand (1938 -1944, 1948 - 1957) who came up with the idea of setting up a flea market in every town. As a result, the first flea market in Bangkok was held at Sanam Luang and was called Sanam Luang Flea Market. however, there was a time when the place was needed for other special functions and the flea market was then relocated to Saranrom Place where itt remained for eight years. After that, it was moved again to Sanam Chai. Because of the Limited space, it had to be moved back to Sanam Luang. But in the same year, the government issued a policy to turn Sanam Luang into a public park for citizens of Bangkok and make it the venue to celebrate the 200-year anniversary of Krung Rattankosin in 1982. Thus, it was decided that the flea market would be held at Paholyothin District from then on and it was later named Chatuchak Market after the nearby park under the same name.
The largest market in Bangkok
JJ market is the largest market because of its extensive space, totaling around around 28 acres. The name Chatuchak Marker appears in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest flea market in the world, selling thousands of items. Not surprisingly, lots of people get lost during their shopping here.

"I just returned on a 2 week tour of Thailand and Laos with your company. Had a great time and it was so well organized. I would like to get Mr. Aesopa's email so I can email him some pictures of my son and I. Mr. Aesopa is a wonderful guide and he really enhanced the trip by showing us some unusual places and food. We even tried dried insects and snake whisky. Thank you again and we can't wait to plan our next trip. Our friends want to go to with us to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in the near future."
