Hua Hin and its neighboring town Cha-am, are the Kingdom's oldest resort towns. They were originally two small fishing villages that were embraced by the royal family upon completion of the rail road, and they evolved into popular get aways for the Bangkok elite. A convenient three and a half hours by train from Bangkok, these golden sand beaches became popular starting in the early 1920's. Today, Hua Hin is home to many upscale resorts as well as Thailand's first golf course (The Royal Hua Hin). As the town evolved, it became less and less a place for the wealthy Thai's, and began to focus more on tourism. Hua Hin is a great beach for family trips. It offers horse back rides on the beach, a mix of restaurants and daytime entertainment, and is more focused on the resort style holiday makers. Do to the royal families summer home, where the present day King currently spends most of his time, it is a little on the quiet side and there is a fairly strong police presence that is primarily focused on keeping the area safe.
The smaller beach side town of Cha-am is a 30 minute drive to the north of Hua Hin along Petchkasem Road. Cha-am's resorts line the beach running south from the village and heading toward Hua Hin for about 5 miles (8 km). Despite all of the traffic, these towns are very simple and easy to navigate. The main street (Petchkasem Road) runs parallel to the ocean about four blocks inland. Wide Damnoenkasem Road intersects Petchkasem Road and leads to the beach. On the north side of the road you will find an assortment of guest houses, restaurants, and some quiet nightlife.
