Once famous for its house and carriage transportation long after the car was introduced, Lampang is a small town nestled in the former Lanna Kingdom which is often overlooked by tourists. The town is known for having some of the most profound Burmese style temples in all of Thailand, and to this day you can see the town from a horse and buggy which you can find next to City Hall. Lampang isn't especially popular with tourists, but if you are looking to break the mold of common destinations it is worth considering. Like Chiang Mai, Lampang maintains many of the cultural characteristics from the ancient Lanna Kingdom. The center of town is marked with a tall, old, European style clock, and there is a nice selection of Thai style restaurants and nightlife along the river. It is a small, inexpensive town very rich in culture, and if you go there without any real expectations other than absorbing the local lifestyle and enjoying the diversification from the other northern Thai cities, you will find it to be a charming place. While there, you may wish to see the baby elephant training center which is about 33 miles (54km) east of town. It's not really a tourist attraction, and the focus is on the elephants rather than the spectators, but if your in the area its a fun day trip.
