Family Fun Destinations

Once called Xieng Teng, Stung Treng was originally part of the Khmer Empire. It became part of the Lao kingdom of Lan Xang, then the Lao kingdom of Champassack, until the French Indochina period when it was surrendered back to Cambodia. More recently, the province (with a capital city by the same name) has become known for its success as a transit passage for heroin between Burma, Laos, and Thailand. Drug lords have found that it can be transferred out more easily than other countries, and the government has become more corrupt since this realization.

Lay of the land

Located on the banks of San River in northern Cambodia, Stung Treng is bordered by: Ratanakiri to the east, Mondolkiri to the southeast, Kratie to the south, Kampong Thom to the southwest, and Preah Vinear to the west, and Laos to the north. It is divided into five districts: Sesan, Siem Bouk, Siem Pang, Stung Treng, and Thala Barivat.

What to see and do

The early evening riverfront scene is usually the busiest hub of socialization, like most river towns. The Stung Treng market is a lively place that sells goods from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. There is even an organization in the market that teaches women silk weaving.

Siem Pang Village is a unique place, where Cambodian and Lao cultures clash, creating an interesting blend of people, food, and goods. Close to the Siem Pang village, you can arrange an outing to Virachey National Park with park rangers at their offices.

The 300-year-old Hang Ko Ban temple and the Wat Phu ruins are popular draws in Stung Treng. The Khone Phapheng waterfalls, located just south of the Wat Phu ruins are also a magnificent sight to see in the town, and there is a swimming hole just outside of town.

Getting around

Like most Cambodian rentals, the average for a moto-taxi is US$6-8 a day, or a single trip in town is between 1,000 and 1,500 riel. Also like other Cambodian rentals, negotiation is an option is the driver’s price is too high. A tuk-tuk single ride is usually US$1-2 or US$7-10 a day. A car rental is approximately US$25 a day and restaurants and hotels can arrange car taxis. Most guesthouses and hotels also rent out bicycles and motorcycles.
