Sukhothai, meaning the "Dawn of Happiness" in Pali language, is a world renown historical site. Sukhothai is to Thailand what Angkor Wat is to Cambodia. Recognized as the first Thai Kingdom, the ancient city gained its prominence and independence in 1238. Nine kings ruled over the expanding region up until its annex in 1376 by the rulers of Ayuthaya, ending its position as the capital of Thailand which it held for 120 years. The remains of the ancient city are scattered within and around its walls, giving insight to the golden era that the city is now synonymous with. The classic Buddhist artwork and architecture of the Sukhothai period have never lost their influence on Thai culture, and hundreds of years later Thai temples continue to emulate the style from this era. Sukhothai became the first Thai kingdom where before smaller principalities had commonly existed, most of which at that time under Khmer overrule. Today, most Thai people view Sukhothai as the cradle of the Thai nation.
New Sukhothai, built along the Yom River, is the gateway for the area's main attraction, Sukhothai Historical Park (also commonly referred to as Muang Kao, translating to "old city"). About 35 miles (56km.) north of New Sukhothai is another legacy of the Sukhothai Kingdom, Si Satchanalai. This ancient area of ruins, now reduced to a weathered, crumbling city, is worth the day trip and truly gives a glimpse into another era.
Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, a recent preservation project has really helped keep the monuments intact. It also added a museum and a park facility. The park is open daily from 6 AM - 6 PM, and since the area is far to vast for walking, it is best to get there early enough to sign up for a guided tour, or rent a bicycle from a local shop (also available at the entrance). A network of tall walls and moats define a perfect rectangle that makes up the center of the city. Most people recommend starting at the Ramkamhaeng National Museum, where you can see its detailed models and artifacts from the site. Wat Mahatat, made up of many small towers and chedis is one of the sites most important historical monuments. The Royal Palace and Wat Sri Sawai are also popular highlights.
